The reason for creating a gateway page is that some engines seem to give a boost to pages which the spider finds on it's own rather than pages that are submitted directly to the search engines by hand. Consequently, the gateway page is submitted to the search engines instead of submitting all of your pages individually. The spider theoretically crawls the gateway page and follows the links to each page on your site. The spider, being so happy that it found this content all on it's own, then tends to give your pages a little bit of a boost in the search engine's ranking. The doorway page is designed specifically to look good to the search engine targeted and therefore in most cases little thought is given to the actual browser that will see the page content. This is not normally a handicap as most doorway pages are designed to act as a portal, bridge, or doorway to your main site by use of a clickable link and/or a meta refresh tag (hence the name doorway page and its generics). By using a high refresh rate a browser may even be unaware that the original doorway page existed at all. However in an effort to curb the use of certain spamming techniques, many search engines have deemed high refresh rates as spam and have penalized them accordingly. Gateway or bridge pages are an excellent means of funneling traffic to an area of your site that is important to sales or lead generation. The most important part of construction of bridge or gateway pages is the links to these areas! You must have them for this to work and increase traffic to that area of the web site. |
